"Aesculapius" by Billy Hiebert This Sculpture is at the University of Pacific School of Pharmacy. In 1966, I was asked to carve the Greek God of Medicine. The budget that was available was way to low for such a work, but as long as I could do it in my own way, I agreed. I wanted to do it in much the same manner as my other work, no planning, just start carving, and let it emerge from the stone. I finished it, they took it away, and I never saw it again. That is until I got curious about it's whereabouts. I had heard that the University had completed at lot of new construction, and I feared that the sculpture may have ended up in a landfill. So I contacted the Dean and almost 50 years later, I traveled to the University. The Dean and staff were great, and I could sense from their comments that the sculpture could not be in safer surroundings. As I looked at the work, it was as though someone else had carved it and I was seeing it for the first time. It was a humbling experience. --Billy Hiebert
